Germantown HELP is a non-profit organization which offers a variety of emergency services to needy residents of Germantown, Maryland area (20874 and 20876 zip codes).
Our organization began operation in January 1986.
Our food program provides emergency assistance through the delivery of approximately three days' worth of nutritional food to individuals and/or families.
Our prescription assistance program provides partial or total funding for doctor-prescribed medication not covered by any other source.
Our baby diaper program distributes diapers to families in need.
Our Holiday Basket program coordinates the referral requests for and distribution of Thanksgiving and December holiday food baskets.
Germantown HELP is supported by local churches, schools, businesses and community groups through food drives, diaper drives, cash donations, and by some grants.
We are a volunteer-driven organization, with only one paid employee.
We work to aid those in the community whose own resources have been depleted.
Therefore, it is critical that our own operating expenses are kept to a minimum.
To run at our highest efficiency, we depend on a steady supply of four things: food, diapers, money and volunteers.
Food supplies are divided into two categories: perishable and non-perishable.
For non-perishable items, we rely entirely on donations from the community groups mentioned above.
Items we ALWAYS need (because they are part of the standard food package we provide our clients) are breakfast cereal, peanut butter, jelly, tuna fish, canned fruits, vegetables and soups, rice and pasta.
Perishable items are purchased on a weekly basis with cash donations.
Perishables that are a part of our standard food package are: bread, milk, eggs, orange juice and margarine.
Occasionally, when supplies run low, we also use any cash donations to stock our shelves with non-perishables as well.
For our prescription assistance program, we need cash donations; and for our diaper program, we need donations of diapers, especially in the larger sizes (4, 5 & 6), and pull-ups.
Without volunteers, we cannot accomplish our mission.
